Social media can certainly be a power for good but for many of us the platforms have just become too much. Social media infiltrates our lives more than anything else that we do, and this is why it may be worth having a break and signing out of your accounts for a little while. This is something which mental health experts like Roger Wolfson have been pretty vocal about of late, the need for us to reduce the mount of time and the dependency which we have on social media. There are many reasons why we should do this and these are just some of the benefits which you’ll be able to count on when you do.
More Control
You may not recognize it but when you use social media so heavily, it is very easy for you to lose control of what you think and how you think. The reason for this is that there is so much information online and so many opinions, that we often base our own assertions and opinions on those of the people who we like, rather than based on what we actually believe.
More Present
One of the biggest dangers of using social media is that we become disconnected from reality, even though our social media profiles would tell a different story. What happens here is that we are so obsessed with sharing to the world what we are doing, that we aren’t actually enjoying what we are doing in the present time. Think of those people who snap their food and share it straight to social media, they are not enjoying the meal and the experience, they just want to tell people that they are.
Less Worried
Because of the fact that social media gives us access to information from all over the world, we end up seeing all sorts of tragedies taking place and all kinds of horror stories which we perhaps would not have known about otherwise. Whether you are aware of it or not, this greatly increases how much we worry about things, because we are watching negative events and stories taking place all of the time. When you give up social media for a while then you will certainly find that you worry less.
Confidence
The way in which social media plays with our confidence and our emotions is crazy, and we don’t even recognize that it is happening. I a single post we can feel 10 foot tall, or we can be made to feel tiny and insignificant, such is the power of the platform. Giving up social media will mean that you have much more confidence in being who you are. After just a couple of days you will feel completely different if you don’t use social media and at the very least you should think about just giving it a try.
Focus on you and your mental health for a while, give up social media and enjoy these benefits almost straight away.
